Karenni Language Program

CSE’s Karenni program supports the retention and growth of Karenni language proficiency in our Karenni middle school students. Every other day, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students work to acquire and strengthen their Karenni literacy skills and their understanding of Karenni culture in beginning and intermediate-level classes. Mr. Sunny Pleh leads these classes, this program, and oversees Karenni translations for CSE.

The classes also focus on subjects such as Karenni history, culture stories, Karenni leaders, and traditional beliefs and events. Students have a test at the end of each unit. Students have computer time for 25 minutes to practice Karenni typing every Friday. Speaking and writing are also incorporated into our work, which will be completed individually, with partners, or in a small group. 8th grade Karenni students must know all these aspects for a presentation they will give at the end of the school year.

For the 2015-16 school year, our Karenni program serves eleven 6th graders, fifteen 7th graders, and ten 8th graders.
